What is CycleMAYnia and how can you volunteer or host your own bike event?

Most of us know that 'commuter' or 'lifestyle' bicycling is healthy, fun and great for the bottom line and now WE ARE GOING TO CELEBRATE IT! In late November 2009, the DIY community run bike center, Bici Centro hosted a sizable kick off party to announce the winning 2010 Bicycling Events title, voted best from over 300 entries, “CycleMAYnia”.  Over the past eight months, a partnership of the Santa Barbara Bicycle Coalition and Traffic Solutions met regularly through Bici Centro, to put together a process and a budget to celebrate bicycle culture on a larger scale, and in a more democratic way than the south coast has seen over the past decade.

By forming a partnership to creatively challenge the community at large, and offer financial and administrative assistance, the group aims to host not only an event-filled Month of May, hence "CycleMAYnia" but also large bicyclist centered events year round. The goal is clearly to involve the public at large in the planning process for the bike month festivities, a successfull strategy employed by transportation agencies around the country, notably in San Luis Obispo and Portland. Already moving forward with the support of the City of Santa Barbara, Wheelhouse Bikes, Telegraph Brewery, and other partners, the SB Bicycle Coalition and Traffic Solutions are clearly gearing for a strong public presence for 2010's “CycleMAYnia.”

Funding and support available to the public!

CycleMAYnia Kicks Off Public Involvement in Bicycling Events by offering ‘mini-grants’ from $50-$500 for the public to host bike–friendly events.

If your creative juices are flowing and you're poised to host the best bike event since the Tour of California, how do you get started? Come to our CycleMAYnia volunteer meetings every 2nd and 4th Thursday at BiciCentro and make sure to get your mini-grant application here and checklist here.

Areas of CycleMAYnia future events are:

Rides and Races
Local Business
Art, Fashion, and Film
Workshops and Education
Food and Festivities
Youth Activities
Bicycle Commuting

Members of the Public are invited to both submit ideas and sign-up to be involved in event planning.  With the financial support of Traffic Solutions, the partnership will be administering ‘mini-grants’ of $50-$500 through a simple application process. Awardees will receive even higher value support through administrative, logistical, and publicity-based contributions from CycleMAYnia partners.  Events will be open to the public, legal, inclusive, and centered around sharing the joy of bicycle transportation to the community at large. Additionally this year, with a directed outreach to Spanish speaking bicyclists and the on-going bilingual outreach at Bici Centro, the Bicycle Coalition hopes to see the greatest level of Spanish speaking participants yet.

The next in-person opportunity for public involvement will be at
BiciCentro on Thursday March 11, 2010 from 7:00 - 8:30 PM. 601 E. Montecito St.

History:

Each May since 1994, the Bicycle Coalition,
the City of Santa Barbara, and Traffic Solutions, have promoted activities that encourage people to enjoy bicycling more.  This has always included Bike to Work Day that attracts 500 to 2000 bicyclists to multiple sites around Santa Barbara County, and  rewards those who regularly bicycle, as well as encourages first-timers to give it a chance.  Starting in 1999 Bike to Work Day was expanded to Bike Week and now in 2010 our community is launching CycleMAYnia, a full-fledged Bike Month, with an open and inclusive planning process.
